The Huron School of Nursing is affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic Hospitals and is among the foremost nursing institutions in Ohio. When it originally opened in 1884, the Huron School of Nursing followed the Florence Nightingale model. From its inception, the school was known as an institution of progressive and innovative education and leadership. Today the school is closely connected to the venerated Huron Hospital, which was established in 1856. The school is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and has also been approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Anyone successfully completing the degree requirements at this school is eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination for licensure.
Anyone who has earned a high school diploma or a GED is qualified to apply for admission to the Huron School of Nursing. For high school students looking forward to a college career, the school encourages the completion of credits emphasizing mathematics and the sciences to be prepared to enter nursing school upon graduation. Students must also complete a series of college preparatory classes prior to entering the nursing program. These prerequisites may be completed at either the Cuyahoga Community College or at Notre Dame. Most of these courses are related to biology, chemistry, physiology, or anatomy. Applicants to the school of nursing with the highest GPA will be given priority consideration during the admissions process.
The sequence of classes begins two times each year. Students may enter at either January or August and should begin the application process well in advance of their desired entry date. They must complete an application form, which will be submitted with a fee, and must also provide transcripts from previous schools attended. Students are also required to attend an Admission Information Session prior to formal admission to the college.
Students admitted to the Huron School of Nursing have a variety of program options from which to choose. They may elect to earn a Diploma in Nursing from Huron and an Associate of Science in Health Sciences degree from Notre Dame. Alternatively, they may work toward their Diploma in Nursing at Huron while concurrently earning an Associate Degree from Cuyahoga Community College. Third, they may decide to simply earn a Diploma in Nursing, if the student has already received an Associate, Bachelor, or high degree from another college.
The Huron School of Nursing features a flexible program that has options for students to attend either full or part time. This may include coursework on weekdays, but classes on evenings and weekends are also available. The programs may be completed in two years of full time attendance, but may require as much as four years for those attending class part time. Classes are a challenging mix of academic theory and clinical practice, a blend which prepares the student to meet the demands of the medical field in a variety of health care settings.
