Virginia Commonwealth University is a leader in high quality nursing instruction for its students. The school is equipped with a new facility and experienced faculty members. Also, the programs offered by VCU School of Nursing are unique. The reason for this is due to the fact that the school has partnered with the VCU Health System, thus allowing students clinical experiences that they would be unable to find elsewhere.
A traditional BS Degree will provide students with strong skills for their first degree in nursing. They will have extensive study within a classroom environment as well as clinical work that will take place through various healthcare facilities. This is a three-year program that will allow students, upon graduation, to take the examination for a license as an RN. The coursework will include Human Physiology, Health Assessment, Statistics, Nursing Science, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, Nursing of Adults, Women and Children, and Nursing Leadership, among a number of other courses.
An Accelerated BS Degree is perfect for college students who already have a Bachelor’s Degree in another major. It is a rigorous program that will take place over the course of five semesters.
For those who are Registered Nurses with either a diploma or an Associate’s Degree in Nursing that was acquired through an accredited school, a BS Degree in Nursing through VCU can be earned while still working on a fulltime basis as a nurse. The program can be finished in 18 months or may take as long as six years.
There is also a Master’s of Science Program for Registered Nurses who have a Bachelor’s Degree in an area other than Nursing. This program consists of taking the Traditional MS program along with two 400-level nursing programs.
The traditional MS Program is perfect for those who are already Registered Nurses and would like to specialize in a certain aspect of healthcare, such as Family Health Nursing, Nurse Educator or Child Health Nursing. Upon graduation, students are then eligible to receive certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
The Accelerated MS Program will allow college graduates with degrees in subjects other than nursing to obtain BS and MS Degrees in Nursing. Students will learn at an undergraduate and Master’s level until they have obtained a license as a Registered Nurse. Education will continue until a Master’s Degree has been achieved.
For Registered Nurses with either an Associate’s Degree or diploma in nursing who would like to earn a Master’s Degree in order to become an Advanced Practice Nurse, there is the RN-MS Program. This program will allow students to move quickly into coursework at a Master’s level.
The Post-Master’s Certificate Program will allow Registered Nurses with a Master’s in Science in Nursing to acquire further certification. Studies will be geared to whatever specialized field is required.
At the pinnacle of a nursing education is the PhD Program offered by VCU School of Nursing. This program is ranked among the finest in the nation and will provide a course of study geared to research at the highest level. Students who successfully complete this program will achieve a Doctor of Philosophy.
Graduates of VCU School of Nursing will have received one of the finest educations that can be obtained in the nursing field. Whatever form of instruction has already been obtained, there are degree programs that are geared to fit every educational level. Graduates will be prepared for any one of a number of nursing positions. Depending on the degree, they may also have the proper skills for leadership or educator roles in the nursing field.
